Announcement (Apr 8, 2020)

Dear local organizers and prospective participants of APLO 2020,

Taking into consideration the current global health situation, the Board of APLO has decided not to conduct APLO 2020 in April. After careful deliberation about options, we have decided to postpone APLO to September 2020, conditional upon an improved situation at that time. We will announce the exact date in July after discussion with local organizers.

While we sincerely hope APLO will be able to proceed in September, we will continue to assess the situation and take a decision in July with the health and safety of our participants in mind. There will be no postponement beyond September and we have decided not to conduct an online contest in any form.

Meanwhile, we will be accepting applications for both full and guest participation from countries who are not currently participants of the APLO. In order to apply for accreditation, please contact us at <[email protected]> by June 30, 2020. Note that, due to the short time frame, we cannot guarantee providing your working language. If you would like to participate in a language other than the previously provided ones, please contact us at the earliest to discuss the options.

We hope for your health and well-being, and look forward to seeing you at APLO!

Regards,
The Board of APLO

Announcement (Mar 12, 2020)

Dear local organizers and prospective participants of APLO 2020,

As you would be aware, the World Health Organization (WHO) made the assessment that COVID-19 can now be characterized as a pandemic based on the scale and increase of the global spread of the virus. Several countries/regions participating in APLO have been affected by the pandemic to various extents. Among them are the countries of which the governments have issued advisories to avoid large gatherings and public meetings.Keeping in line with the advisories as well as for the safety of our contestants, the Board of APLO have decided to postpone this year’s APLO by a month. APLO 2020 will now be held on the 26th of April, 2020. Since the situation is rapidly evolving, we are closely monitoring the circumstances across the participating countries and please be aware that there is a possibility of further postponement or complete cancellation of the contest this year.

Here is a summary of the revised dates:
* The APLO 2020 official contest will be held on Sunday, April 26th, 2020. The time slot remains the same.
* Guest countries can hold the competition within a period of time between April 26th and May 26th, 2020.

All the local organizers should make sure they pass along this information accordingly to their (provisional) contestants. The package distribution will be postponed by a month as well.We understand that this change in date will affect your planning; however, we hope you understand the graveness of the situation, and cooperate and support us on this decision.

Sincerely,
The Board of APLO

Announcement (Jul 27, 2020)

Dear local organizers and prospective participants of APLO 2020,

The global health crisis has affected every corner of the world and disrupted many aspects of our lives. In order to persist our goal of spreading the science of language to the Asia Pacific region, the Board of APLO had decided not to cancel this year’s APLO. There is no change in this decision and APLO 2020 is scheduled to be held in September this year.

The scheduled date of APLO 2020 is September 27th, 2020. The full list of countries and regions that are participating in this year’s competition will be disclosed shortly before the competition for it has to be determined carefully by examining the local pandemic situations of each testing site.
We look forward to resuming our international collaboration on linguistics education and wish to provide academic opportunities and motivations to the youths around the world who might have been impacted by the crisis.
